Janice Rooney manages the corporate relations activities for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). NREL is DOE’s primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development located in Golden. NREL’s work focuses on advancing renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies from concept to the commercial marketplace through industry partnerships. The Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC, a partnership between Battelle and the Midwest Research Institute, manages NREL for DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy.
NREL began operating July 5, 1977, as the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) and soon became the only national laboratory with the single focus to create clean and renewable energy technologies.
Rooney has worked in NREL public affairs more than 10 years. She works with numerous stakeholders and community organizations addressing the role of clean energy technologies. She is instrumental in the lab’s external outreach and manages the NREL Executive Energy Leadership Program.
Rooney is past co-chair of the Metro Denver Workforce in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) leadership council and serves on Metro Denver EDC’s Colorado Energy Coalition. She is a member of the Tri-County Workforce Investment Board and supports several community organizations.
"The Metro Denver EDC is a valuable leader in accelerating clean energy technology development in the region. Renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies have gained important visibility through NREL’s partnership with the Metro Denver EDC Executive Committee, the Colorado Energy Coalition, and the Metro Denver WIRED Initiative."
