HOK to lead urban design for Riverwalk

Starting in 2012, the City of Glendale intends to transform 42 acres along the Cherry Creek riverfront into a world-class entertainment district that will attract visitors from countless places around the world year round. The new district will include up to 1.5 million square feet of restaurants, retail shops, entertainment venues, hotels, and the National Rugby Hall of Fame. In addition to creating a new downtown for the City of Glendale, the project will also include the revitalization of Cherry Creek within the Riverwalk boundaries.

The design and construction team is led by INTEGRAL Real Estate Development and includes HOK, Tryba Architects, The Beck Group, Turner Construction, Populous, and Vision Land Consultants. HOK is a full-service planning and architecture firm with an international collaborative network of 25 offices. HOK urban designers and landscape architects David Amalong and Robb Berg will lead the urban design efforts on the Glendale Riverwalk project.

Brian J. Levitt, president of INTEGRAL Real Estate Development, speaks to the significance of HOK's role. "It is immense, as we hope the Glendale Riverwalk will become an international destination, to which HOK can bring its knowledge base of world planning and design principles. Its unique capacity for understanding Colorado's natural environment and progressive thinking when it comes to sustainability worldwide makes the firm uniquely qualified to plan and design this complex 42-acre, organic, 24/7 entertainment district."

HOK specializes in creating compelling destination projects around the world and recently completed the 40-hectare Suzhou Times Square in China, a major cultural, retail, and entertainment district. Opened in 2009, the district is comprised of a series of distinct experiences that link anchor hotels, offices, retail destinations, and open-space amenities. Bridges and courtyards create a rhythm of areas that support dining, strolling, and shopping experiences along the canal length. Dubai Marina, another recently completed mixed-use and entertainment project, is a 578-hectare waterfront community. This community features active town centers and a wide variety of housing options linked by boardwalks, promenades, and gardens.

HOK will bring this global perspective, wide-ranging experience, and unique design talent to the Riverwalk project. As a result, the Glendale Riverwalk has the potential to be one of the topmost entertainment destinations around the world.
