25th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. awards lunch Jan. 15

The 25th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Business Social Responsibility Awards luncheon will be held on Friday, January 15, 2010 at the Marriott City Center Hotel, 1701 California Street in downtown Denver. Each year, this event recognizes the business community in memory and honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Six businesses and individuals will be recognized with Business Social Responsibility Award in appreciation of their commitment to the values of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: Concerts for Kids, The Denver Hospice, The Epworth Foundation, Pastor Heidi McGinness, Mount Saint Vincent Home and Western Union. In addition, the fourth annual “Trailblazer Award” will be presented to Marie L. Greenwood, the first African-American teacher hired by Denver Public Schools. She taught first grade at Whittier Elementary and received her permanent tenure in 1938. She is the first teacher ever to have a Denver Public School named in her honor. In 2001, the Marie L. Greenwood K-8 School was dedicated.

This event gives the business community an opportunity each year to honor Dr. King’s memory and reaffirm their commitment to the values and goals to which he dedicated his life. Proceeds from the luncheon will be donated to the Colorado Scholarship Coalition, who will select and award Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarships.

The luncheon begins at 11:45 a.m. Individual tickets cost $75. Three levels of corporate tables of ten are available: Bronze $1,250, Silver $1,875 and Gold  $2,500. Thirteen community organizations sponsor the luncheon each year.
