DDP unveils incentive program for commuters during DNC
Beginning June 30th, Downtown Denver employees who typically drive to work alone will be offered an incentive to leave their cars at home during the month of August in exchange for using transit, walking, bicycling or carpooling. The program will reward participants with a $100 VISA gift card if they use an alternative mode of transportation at least 15 working days during August. The program, entitled "Get Downtown UnCONVENTIONally", was created by the Downtown Denver Partnership through a $173,000 Federal grant.
"With the 2008 Democratic National Convention taking place in Downtown in the last week of August, we thought this would be the perfect time to encourage people to try a new way to get Downtown," said Tamara Door, President & CEO of the Downtown Denver Partnership. "It has been said that this convention will be one of the greenest in history—we're hoping that this will get the locals thinking about what they can do to contribute to this goal. Ultimately, we hope this new commuting experience will become a lifelong habit."
Participants will be required to enter each commuting trip in an online commute log and must update it at least every 72 hours. Those who successfully fulfill the program requirements will be mailed a $100 VISA gift card at the beginning of September. Participants will also be surveyed six months and 12 months later to follow up on any changes in their commuting patterns.
A sister program, “Unconventional Commuters”, has also been designed to reward Downtown Denver commuters who are already leaving their cars at home. Participants in that program will be entered into drawings for prizes like iPods, gift cards and new bicycles.
