ITT launches academic partnership program to support higher education

Colleges and universities will partner with ITT to make advanced image and data analysis technology readily available to students in preparation for the workforce

ITT Visual Information Solutions, a subsidiary of ITT Corporation, announced a new academic partnership program designed to help educators foster students’ careers in disciplines involving geospatial imagery and complex numerical data. The program, entitled “ITT Innovation Centers,” is available to any college or university in the United States and Canada offering courses that involve the use of image and data analysis software as a core component of the curriculum. Under the program, ITT may provide its partners with a number of educational benefits, including licenses of the company’s industry-leading software products for image and data analysis, ENVI and IDL, for use in classroom instruction. Other advantages include access to professional training resources and consultations with ITT representatives on course structure and curriculum, as well as the opportunity to preview and give feedback on releases of ENVI and IDL.

As partners in the program, participating academic institutions will contribute to advancements in data and image analysis within the ENVI and IDL product lines, and they will provide curriculum, research and papers, and other resources of value to others in the academic community.

“We are pleased to introduce this program, which we have been developing in conjunction with accredited academic institutions in North America that use ENVI and IDL to create meaningful, relevant course curricula,” said Nigel Brown, Director of Academic Programs for ITT. “These partnerships will help us enable students to pursue professional positions in top commercial, government, and defense organizations after graduation.”

ITT has been a significant contributor to academic initiatives since IDL, its flagship data analysis product, was developed at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics in 1977 and later commercialized and used extensively for scientific discovery. In the 1990s ITT introduced ENVI, a comprehensive software product for processing and analyzing geospatial imagery, and it has been widely adopted across commercial, government, and academic disciplines for its value in remote sensing applications. Both products are used today in college and university programs around the world.
