WIRED Initiative

Colorado Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA)

MESAOrganization: Colorado Minority Engineering Association

Grant Round: Jumpstart

Program’s Objectives: MESA’s JumpStart award accelerated the successful replication of its network for delivery of after school programs for pre-collegiate and college-prep STEM competency development and career pathway mentoring programs for low-income, women and minority students.

Individuals Served: Our MESA program serves over 3,500 students annually statewide. Approximately 1,400 students are served in the nine county WIRED region. MESA provides professional development for teachers, mentoring, and hands-on math and science based curriculum for students.

Success Story: The MESA High School Science and Engineering Jamboree at Colorado School of Mines attracted over 370 students from all over the nine county WIRED area. Students demonstrated their problem solving abilities in math and engineering projects ranging from trebuchet design and operation to Web site design.

Quote: “The establishment of MESA Centers at CU and CSU and the implementation of mentoring programs have allowed us to add a new level of support to teachers and students involved in MESA.”
